Only 8 miles to the east of Gwernydd Hall is the picturesque border town of Welshpool, known as the ‘gateway to Wales’, with the spectacular Powis Castle and the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway – one of the great little trains of Wales. The georgian architecture that adorns the curving high street would merit a visit in itself, but there is plenty more to do and see in what is one of Powys’ biggest towns.
Newtown provides the ideal base to explore the surrounding countryside. Nearby there are nature reserves, riverside walks, Montgomery Canal paths, the Severn Way, Dolforwyn Castle and Gregynog Hall & Gardens, a stunning country house built by Lord Davies of Llandinam.
