Visit Welshpool

When you own a holiday home in Mid Wales you benefit from being close to some of the best Welsh towns. Welshpool, just 8 miles from Gwernydd Hall and on the border between Wales and England, is a pretty market town also known as the ‘gateway to Wales’. The town is loved for its picturesque Georgian buildings that meander around the bustling high streets, and it is the perfect base for exploring Mid Wales.

Powis Castle

One of the most popular places to visit in Welshpool is the Natural Trust site, Powis Castle and Gardens, a medieval castle originally built in circa 1200. A Grade I listed building surrounded by formal, distinctive gardens, Powis Castle is one of the top places to visit in Wales. The unique, luscious grounds have been described as an enormous green pillow on which the dramatic building perches. The Castle itself is also home to a museum full of beautiful treasures from around the world.

Museum

On the canal side, you’ll find the Powysland museum. Home to artefacts belonging to the bronze ages through to pieces from local designer, Laura Ashley, the museum is the perfect place to learn about the local history and the history of Montgomeryshire. You will also find displays looking at agriculture, the railway and there are even World War Two exhibitions.

The Railway

Welshpool and Llanfair light railway is a narrow-gauge heritage railway running through the beautiful Welsh countryside. The trains are steam hauled, and some carriages have open balconies where you can watch the world go by and breathe in the countryside air. The journey is also an excellent way to spot a variety of wildlife including deer, hawks and otters. Railway enthusiasts will love the driver experience days with the railway team where, under the guidance of a regular driver, you will be at the controls of the locomotive!
