Newtown is the biggest town in Powys and lies nestled into the largest river in the UK, the River Severn. Steeped in history and surrounded by stunning landscapes, there are so many things to do in Newtown that the whole family can enjoy.
Packed with museums and galleries, Newtown is the perfect place for those that love history and culture. The Newtown Textile Museum transports you back into the industrial history of how 19th century handloom weavers lived. Just 15 minutes down the road from the textile museum you’ll find the Mid Wales Arts Centre, which is home to a unique collection of sculptures and paintings. The Centre is free to enter and regularly hosts new and exciting exhibitions and events.
Gregynog Hall is an imposing country mansion surrounded by 750 acres of stunning grounds. This beautiful, historic estate welcomes visitors through its grand doors every year. The formal gardens are listed Grade 1 and it’s no wonder they are so popular with their impressive collection of David Austin roses, striking sculptures and sweeping lawns. This is one of Newtown’s truly hidden treasures.
Newtown is also home to ‘The Hafren’, a popular theatre and entertainment venue that has hosted several A-list acts such as Ed Byrne, Jack Dee and even Lulu. This popular venue in the heart of Mid Wales has also hosted a variety of different shows including comedy, cinema and dance. Comfortably seating over 500 people, The Hafren provides visitors with an authentic theatre experience.
Just on the edge of Newtown sits Llanidloes, the first town on the River Severn. Home to Georgian period, timber-framed buildings and shop fronts, this romantic Medieval town is rich in culture and history. The Old Market Hall, built around 1600, is the only surviving building of its type in Wales. There’s plenty of nature here too, with the tranquil woodland and waterfalls of Hafren Forest to explore. The impressive Llyn Clywedog reservoir and Clywedog Dam is a must-see for nature-seekers too.
